Shirley Ross

My work is based on observation of the natural and man-made environment. Each piece begins when something I see, perhaps open landscape or a group of buildings, becomes transformed into a rhythm of line, colour and texture, like an essence: concentrated, powerful and exciting. In my work I try to capture that power and excitement and share it with the viewer.

After studying Woven Textiles at The Royal College of Art, weaving seems the natural way for me to communicate what I see. Visual rhythms appear to me as vertical structure and horizontal movement, warp and weft in my mind’s eye.

I make sketches and take photographs which are then worked on until the image appears in its most expressive form. I turn this into a working drawing and begin to weave.

I exhibit regularly and have commissioned works in public and private collections. When undertaking a commission I enjoy the challenge of expressing ideas while working co-operatively within a brief.
