IDENTITY EXHIBITION 6-15 APRIL 2012

The BTG’s South East area group presents an exhibition of woven tapestries on the theme of IDENTITY. The exhibition is being held in a converted windmill on the South Downs in Sussex. The full address is Mill House Gallery, Ecclesden Lane, Angmering, West Sussex, BH16 4DQ. Open all days from April 6th to 15th, from 11:00 to 4:30 p.m. Late night opening until 7 p.m. on April 6th and 13th.

Note that due to the nature of the building there are steep steps to all floors of the gallery apart from the ground floor. Parking and toilets available.

My cultural heritage is rich and diverse, including African, Amerindian and European traditions, which inspire and inform my pieces. I have been weaving for over 30 years.
Brilliant and bold colour ranges in different fibres are a constant challenge and excitement to me. Works are not planned but emerge from the beauty and richness of the colours and textures of the yarns.

I have always collected objects found on walks and travels, and they are often the central focus of a piece. These natural and manmade objects, often with layers of history embedded in them, are ‘recycled’ through my pieces.

I rarely use a cartoon, preferring the organic process in which I surrender to the ‘energy’ of an idea and the senses engage and support the process.

I very enjoy working with kindred spirits, young and old, who are drawn to weaving and textiles as a medium for their creative expression.

June’s work is informed by fleeting changes in nature: of skies, ripples of wind and water, reflections and shadows. Through the use of curves and drape, shadow and light, she tries to introduce the illusion of movement and change into her weaving.
‘I have been weaving for many years and have recently been including more areas of tapestry weaving into my pieces as I am enjoying exploring the possibilities for colour blending and texture this provides.’
She weaves mainly with delicate dyed and painted silk threads, also liking to experiment with more unusual materials such as copper wire, soluble thread and ‘found’ items. Work ranges from woven transparencies to wall hangings and 3D pieces.
She runs textile workshops at her studio, provides sessions for schools and groups including working as an artist/educator for The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, and tutor for weaving courses at Dragon Hall in Norwich

June takes part in Norfolk Open Studios in May/June, and Muspole Christmas Open Studios (see website for details). At other times the studio can be visited by appointment. Studio 6 Muspole Workshops 25-27 Muspole Street Norwich NR3 1DJ
