I enjoy working with colour, so I took my idea for the Tsunami piece from a large abstract painting I did, on the coast in Portugal. The weaving is made with a blend of wool, silk and cotton.

Kilmouski

Kilmouski is a narrowboat. As I sat one evening on the canal bank looking over the reeds and across all the colourful narrowboats in the marina, glowing in the setting sun, I thought I would like to capture the peace, calm and quiet of that moment. Simply a moment in time captured forever.

Kilmouski is woven in wool and linen.

Autumn Tree

My picture the 'Autumn Tree', was created because of my love of trees. I particularly like the colours of the leaves in Autumn. 
I decided to just use worsted spun wool yarn and weave over single and double warps to give some background texture. For the leaves, I wanted to use lots of blends of autumn colour and make them look 3D, so I wove loops. The trunk was made by wrapping the wool around the warps. The spiky shapes at the base of the tree represent autumn grasses and were woven over single warps.
The tapestry is mounted on wood because I felt that this is relevant to the subject of the picture and gives it a rustic feel.

Weaving tapestries is all about storytelling. It starts with the imagined idea which develops through the design to the execution. Sometimes the story is obvious, as in figurative work such as Window on Weavers. I like to think my fingers are telling a story as they weave the different colour threads into a picture.
