Tapestry of the North : Our Textile Heritage
Tapestry of the North: Our Textile Heritage showcases work from the talented Northern England members of the British Tapestry Group, comprising a series of tapestries hand-woven in a diverse range of styles and techniques. The work has been created by tapestry artists at all levels, from renowned professionals to more recent converts to this historic medium.
The work in the exhibition reflects the textile heritage of the north of England, from the links of the River Tees to carpet making, linen weaving and textile dyeing, to the heritage of weaving cotton in Lancashire Mills and Cottonopolis, wool production and sheep farming across the hills and dales, and the architectural and artistic legacy of the Mill buildings themselves.
The exhibition travels between three venues. It opens at Farfield Mill, a historic riverside woollen mill in Cumbria’s Howgill Fells, on Wednesday 17th September, running until Sunday 21st December. There is a Meet the Makers on Saturday October 4th, 2 - 4pm. The Farfield Mill People’s Prize will be announced on Sunday 14th December - please vote for your favourite work when you visit the exhibition!
In early 2026 it moves to Kirkleatham Museum in Redcar, on Yorkshire’s North Sea Coast (16th January to 16th July 2026), then continues to the historic wool town of Halifax and the Bankfield Museum in September 2026 (12th September 2026 - 6th March 2027).
