As a BTG Scottish Region member with family in Australia, I recently visited the Parramatta Tapestry near Sydney (see detail left). This massive 11.5 x 7 metres tapestry was commissioned by a corporation and woven at the Australian Tapestry Workshop. The tapestry is stunning, not only in its size but in the Aboriginal dreamtime and painterly interpretation of the subject; the Parramatta River.
But ..... the plaque alongside includes information on the piece and the topic and concludes " Oil on Linen"! A mistake? Was it woven from an original painting in that medium? I decided that if I were part of a weaving team - although I am not a professional weaver - I would be concerned that inaccurate information was associated with my work. So I accessed the ATW workshop contact details and emailed my observations to them - also, of course, telling them how I appreciated the tapestry. The pleasant reply received from the ATW informed me that the responsibility for labelling lays with the commissioner of the piece, whom I could contact. Which I chose not to, but......…
Whose responsibility should it be to check given information for accuracy; the weaver(s), the exhibitors, the commissioners? I have no answer but feel somewhat aggrieved for the artists who designed and created this superb weaving.
Have you ever experienced inaccurate descriptions of works? Have you felt moved to raise a question with the owner/organiser of the event? Do share your comments.

How great that you had the opportunity to view this piece.
I would absolutely contact the commissioner of the piece. Is this Walker Corp Chairman of the Arts? I am sure he would have an interest in accurate labels.
