Barbara Heller

In my tapestries, I draw on personal travels and experiences, my Jewish heritage, my own and old family photos, and the mystical side of world religions to develop a personal iconography which will resonate with the viewer. I want to express what we are losing - our sense of who we are and how we fit into our world - and a hope for the future.

I am a passionate proponent of the art of tapestry and its place in contemporary art. Over the past forty years, I have exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally and my tapestries have been featured in several books and catalogues from solo shows. I have represented Canada overseas at symposia and conferences and lectured on my own work and on the place of Canadian tapestry in the world. Most important, I try to be at my loom every day.

My studio, Fibre Art Studio, is situated on Granville Island in Vancouver, an arts and crafts hub with a food and a maritime market. The studio is open to the public from 11am to 4 pm seven days a week or by appointment.
