Woven tapestry recently returned into my work as a vehicle for creating imagery in order to harness a new narrative thread in my exploration of ‘sexuality and identity’ through the confines of the male form. Much of my work embraces the etching process. Not satisfied with using paper to capture my printed ideas, I began a new body of work combining weaving and printmaking, using the woven tapestry base as my new surface.
The idea of printing onto fabric is by no means new, although the woven tapestry surface is fresh and distinctive! Though much of my work has been concerned with etchings, the incorporation of woven tapestry into the pieces as a ‘base’ has afforded me the chance to work with this ‘borderline’, a place where attempts can be made to create seamless unions.
